Goodness and Cleverness

Being simple and straightforward can make things harder than expected.

You speak honestly. You take people at their word. You try to be fair. There is no intention to calculate or position yourself.

And yet, situations do not always respond in the same way.

It becomes easier to notice, over time, that much of what moves things forward is not always visible on the surface. There are unspoken ways of speaking, knowing when to hold back, when to appear certain, when not to reveal everything at once.

This realisation does not arrive sharply. It settles in quietly.

Being good does not always make life easier. At times, it can make things more complicated.

But the answer does not seem to lie in becoming harder or more guarded.

It feels closer to something else.

To remain simple, but not unaware.

To stay truthful, but understand how the world moves.

Not to become clever in a way that distances you from yourself, but to learn how to protect what is still open.
