Present, But Not Participating

There are moments when you find yourself sitting among people, and the conversation continues without you.

Nothing feels out of place. Someone is speaking with interest. Someone else responds. The setting is easy, even familiar.

And yet, something in you does not move forward into it.

It is not exclusion. It is not discomfort. The words are there, the space is open — but the impulse to enter does not come.

There is no clear point where this begins. It happens quietly. You remain present, but not involved in the same way.

At times, a conversation moves in a direction you do not follow. At others, there is simply nothing in it that draws you in.

You stay where you are.

The distance does not feel sharp. It is softer than that. Almost neutral.

You could respond. You could join. But something in you stays still.

Over time, this kind of distance becomes easier to recognise.

It does not ask to be corrected. It does not insist on being filled.

It simply remains — a quiet space between you and what is happening around you.
